People using Assistive Technology

Cara Stang- January 3, 2012
Ludwig van Beethoven: At around the age of 20, while still being a composer, he went almost completely deaf from tinnitus. This didn’t stop him. Beethoven used special hearing tubes and felt his piano to compose his music. It’s incredible that he was probably the most famous classical music composer, yet he never heard his music.
Franklin D. Roosevelt: In 1921, he was paralyzed from the waist down due to a form of polio. He used his disability as an advantage by directing the March of Dimes Program that funded an effective vaccine. He used a wheelchair and steel braces, but could never walk on his own again.
Heather Whitestone: She was deaf since she was 18 months old, but that never stopped her. She went on to become Miss America of 1995. A cochlear implant operation was performed to help her hearing, and she has not regretted that decision.
